The school is a school and not an institute because it is interested in the transmission and production of knowledge about the unconscious. To this effect, the main vehicle for the cultivation of knowledge is the seminar format composed of small groups focused on the study of Freudian texts and Lacanian seminars, as well as lectures and seminars offered by visiting analysts and scholars.

In addition, the school is a place for the transmission of Lacanian analysis which involves the non-standard and standard practice of psychoanalysis as originally practiced by Freud and formalized by Lacanian with his theory of logical time and the variable length and frequency of the sessions and treatment.

In addition to decades of clinical experience in private and public settings, Dr. Moncayo has taught at many academic institutions in the Bay Area and abroad, and still supervises dissertations in several universities. As a retired training director of a large public psychiatric clinic in the Mission district or barrio of San Francisco, he formed and informed generations of clinicians. He was a founding member of LSP (Lacanian School of Psychoanalysis) and has supported its development at both local and national levels.
